08/09 Review: Tevez

Monday, June 22, 2009
Despite the speculation which clouded his second and ultimately final season at United, Carlos Tevez still created, scored and sweated for the cause in 2008/09...

Start to finish: Tevez started fewer league games than Wayne Rooney or Dimitar Berbatov in 08/09, but there was no denying his contribution to a triumphant league campaign. He provided Boxing Day cheer with a late winner at Stoke, laid on Berbatov’s last-minute clincher at Bolton and then, just when the Reds needed him most, he inspired a sensational comeback against Spurs at Old Trafford in late April.

In position: Carlos was at his best for the Reds when tucked just in behind the main striker, although he also had the pace to play on the shoulder of the last man. Covering an awful lot of ground, his constant harassment of defenders often forced errors.

Season highlight: All those long-haul flights to South America for World Cup qualifiers paid off on Boxing Day when Tevez reacted quickest to poke home a winner at Stoke.

Beating the Potters may not seem significant on the face of it, but it was a major boost when you consider the Reds were trailing Liverpool by seven points at kick-off.

Vital contribution: With United 2-0 down to Tottenham, Sir Alex threw on the Argentine at half-time. The effect was instant and Tevez’s enthusiasm rubbed off on both his team-mates and the crowd. Within 12 minutes United had the ball in the net; within 34, the Reds were winning 5-2. The manager’s verdict: “Carlos won us the game.”

Any lows: After bagging four against Blackburn Rovers in the Carling Cup, Tevez found himself warming the bench in the Reds’ next fixture. Frustrating, perhaps, but Sir Alex’s squad rotation ensures everyone’s kept fresh. Indeed, in his next start - at home to Aalborg in the Champions League - it took Tevez just three minutes to find the net.

Any other business: He often celebrated in front of the north-west corner, where his family sat. “They've been very supportive, I like to share special moments with them."

Tevez leaving United

Saturday, June 20, 2009
Following contact received from Carlos Tevez’s advisors last night, in advance of the deadline the Club set for concluding negotiations, Manchester United announces that Carlos will not be signing a new contract with the Club.

The Club agreed to pay the option price of £25.5m and offered Carlos a five-year contract which would have made him one of its highest paid players.

Disappointingly however, his advisors informed the Club that, despite the success he has enjoyed during one of the Club’s most successful periods, he does not wish to continue playing for Manchester United.

The Club would like to thank Carlos for his services over the last two seasons and wishes him good luck for the future.

Fans' views mixed over Tevez

As always, United fans around the world rushed to our message board after reading the breaking news about Carlos Tevez on ManUtd.com. Here are some extracts...

I'm very disappointed, I would have loved him to stay, his work ethic was brilliant. But we are a bigger club than two players. I'm sure Sir Alex will have replacements in mind; however I think Macheda and Welbeck can really stake a claim now. In an ideal world I would like to see Benzema, Ribery and Valencia come but I don't think we'll get Ribery as Munich are asking for ridiculous money. Personally I think we should use the money offered for Tevez (25 million) + 5m to Lyon straight off to get Benzema, then tie up the Valencia deal with Wigan. Then I think someone like Ashley Young could be a great hit at OT, especially under the guidance of SAF. He would be a good buy at 15-20m. I would like to say good luck to Carlos and Ronny and thank them for their service, but United will move on and come out of this stronger.
- Nathan Scholes

I'm gutted. The two players that are leaving, Ronaldo and Tevez, will leave a huge hole. They both have different attributes and are quality players. I am just praying with all my heart that by this time next week we all have something to rejoice about with some new signings. I am shocked at how fast both players have left but I hope "What goes around, comes around" is true for us.

The truth is that Tevez is a good player but will not be greatly missed like Ronaldo. What United needs is a player that can deliver goals always and Tevez does not belong to that class. Sir Alex has always let players go and never regretted doing so. Come the start of the season, I know he'll have bought the right players and we will win again.

I'm a little sad to be honest. I know last year he did not play with much penetration (unlike the season before) but as a lifelong United fan, I appreciate when players show they care and no one can fault his effort on the pitch. I am also a little sad to see Ronaldo leave but I will always be very grateful for his contribution. These things happen in modern football so I guess we just have to live with it. I have faith SAF will know what to do but frankly it's a couple of pairs of big boots to fill. Good luck to both and all the best!

I'm over the moon. He can go play one-touch football somewhere else. Wait. He doesn't have a touch so it will probably be City.
- NikB

I'm happy he`s gone. He was a pitbull on the pitch but sulked like a girl off it. Ferguson has a big job to do now, but I'm sure he will bring in the right players.
- me23

I'm not really that surprised, he seemed hell bent on a move away. He scored vital goals, he was a great player and a real trier especially when we were not playing well - that's when we'll miss him. I'm sure Sir Alex will relish the challenge of replacing him but it also provides the opportunity for Nani, Tosic and Anderson to stake a claim for a starting place.

32. Carlos Tevez

Wednesday, June 3, 2009
Carlos Tévez
Argentina striker Carlos Tevez is one of the game's most lethal finishers, but also has an unwavering work ethic to accompany his natural talents. Little wonder, then, that he quickly became established as a fans' favourite at Old Trafford after arriving in August 2007.

After completing his protracted move from West Ham, Tevez enjoyed a superb first season for United. He developed a thrilling partnership with Wayne Rooney and hit 19 goals, some of them last-gasp and most of them vital to the Reds' Premier League and Champions League Double. Tevez is idolised in South America after successful spells at Boca Juniors and Brazilian side Corinthians. Initially he had to win over fans in Brazil, but eventually he captained Corinthians to the title and became the first foreign player to collect the league's Player of the Year award in almost 20 years.

He then spent the 2006/07 season with West Ham. After a slow start, Tevez embarked on a goalscoring spree that saw him net seven times in just 10 matches as West Ham battled to avoid relegation. That run culminated in the memorable and typically tenacious winner against United at Old Trafford on the final day of the season, which ensured the visitors' top-flight survival.

On the international stage, he propelled Argentina to gold in the 2004 Olympic Games by netting an incredible eight times, featured at the 2006 World Cup and is now a regular member of the senior squad.

Although the arrival of Dimitar Berbatov increased competition for starting berths upfront, Tevez continued to be an influential figure in his second season at Old Trafford.

He notched his first United hat-trick with a four-goal haul against Blackburn Rovers in the quarter-final of the Reds' triumphant League Cup campaign, and added the

Club World Cup to his impressive trophy haul - which already included the Champions League and its South American equivalent, the Copa Libertadores.

Papers: Time to rebuild

Tevez, Nani and Park set to be ditched
Sir Alex Ferguson will reshape his humiliated Manchester United squad after their Champions League debacle against Barcelona. Shell-shocked Fergie has decided he will not take up the option to buy Carlos Tevez, while Nani and Ji-Sung Park could also be high-profile victims of the Rome drubbing. The United manager believes Lyon’s Karim Benzema represents better value for money than Tevez – and to meet Lyon’s £30million asking price there will be fall guys. Nani has failed to impress in his second season at United, while Park may be sacrificed so Fergie can bring in Wigan’s £15m-rated midfielder Antonio Valencia, a long-term target. Goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak is on his way out this summer after failing to impress in three years, with Fergie keen to give England goalkeeper Ben Foster more first-team opportunities next season. United will not take up the option to buy Tevez unless the player’s advisers, led by Kia Joorabchian, lower their asking price by a third to around £18m.

Meanwhile, The Sun claim Cristiano Ronaldo is about to "throw Manchester United into turmoil and demand a move out of Old Trafford". If he does, The Express believe he won't be going to Real Madrid. The paper report Madrid have stopped their pursuit of the Reds winger.

There's some surprising news in The Guardian and The Mail, with claims that Paul Scholes is considering a player-coach role at Stoke City. Scholes has recently admitted he would relish the challenge of management in the future.
