Evra relishing Asia return

Friday, July 10, 2009
Report by James Tuck

Bringing joy to thousands of fans on the other side of the world always makes Patrice Evra proud to be a Red.

United return to Asia on Thursday for the first time since becoming world champions in Japan in December, and two years after a memorable pre-season trip to the Far East. Evra is looking forward to a similar experience this year.

"We have great memories of our last trip to Asia when we won the Club World Cup and it’s always a pleasure to go back," the defender told MUTV. "You feel like you are a pop star when you’re there – the supporters just go crazy wherever we go!

"It’s a privilege to represent the club on these trips and it makes you realise that it doesn’t matter where you live in the world, the club is just one big family."

This month's tour takes in four games in four different countries over eight days. As is the norm on pre-season trips, the players will take part in several charity and community events in between the friendlies.

"One of the great things about going on tour is being able to visit and meet some of the people from local communities," Evra continued. "I visited an orphanage on the last tour in 2007, which was amazing.

"I love being with children and the kids on that visit really touched my heart. That’s my best memory from the last trip."

08/09 Review: Evra

Thursday, June 4, 2009
Always one of the first names on the team sheet, Patrice’s stranglehold on the left-back berth was broken only by suspension and injury...

Start to finish: Evra was ever-present in United’s league campaign from August to November. However, a yellow card in the derby win at City resulted in a one-game ban meaning he missed a league game for the first time in 2008/09 when United drew 0-0 at Tottenham in December. If that was unlucky for Evra, it paled next to his punishment for a post-match incident at Chelsea on 26 April 2008. The FA found Patrice guilty of improper conduct, fined him £15,000 and suspended him four four domestic games. A foot injury further hampered his campaign, but once fit to return, he reclaimed his place for a largely unbroken run at the business end of the season.

In position: Like Denis Irwin in 1993/94, Patrice Evra has become almost indelible in a regular defence that just rolls off the tongue. The words “…and Evra” were uttered by commentators 48 times during 2008/09. And he was once again named at left-back in PFA Team of the Year.

Season highlight: Aside from his two excellent displays in the Champions League semi-final against Arsenal during which he hardly gave Theo Walcott a kick, sixty-six minutes against Chelsea were probably Patrice’s finest hour and a bit of the campaign, especially when you consider the magnitude of the fixture and Evra’s recent personal history with the Reds’ title rivals. Even if injury cut short his appearance, it must still have been sweet for Patrice to play so well and create United’s second goal when Rooney converted his great cross.

Vital contribution: Rarely did one split-second incident sum up the unsung hero’s lot so well. Had Evra not produced the perfect interception when Villa were threatening to score again at 2-2, then play might not have switched to the other end for Macheda to make his name.

Any lows: His ban (see above). “Of all the things the FA has done to this club over the years, this is one of the big shocks. I couldn’t believe it," admitted Sir Alex.

Patrice Evra
United beat off fierce competition from Liverpool, Arsenal and Inter Milan to secure the services of French full-back Patrice Evra on 10 January 2006.

The defender's arrival, just days after Nemanja Vidic’s capture, signalled Sir Alex Ferguson's intention to shore up his defence, which had suffered in the long-term absence of Gabriel Heinze.

Although only 24 when he joined the Reds, Evra had already been capped five times for France. He had been club captain at Monaco, where he established himself as a quick, committed, attack-minded player, also capable of playing at left-midfield.

Evra started his career in Italy after a scout from Masala spotted him in Les Ulis, the same tough suburb of Paris where Thierry Henry grew up. After one season in Serie C1, he moved up to Serie B by joining Monza. In 2000, Nice brought him home to France and converted him from left-winger to left-back. After two seasons he was snapped up by Monaco.

He again had little trouble adjusting to the bigger stage; he was a French League Cup winner in 2003. He then helped Monaco to the 2004 UEFA Champions League final before losing 3-0 to Porto. Patrice cites his first boss at Monaco, Didier Deschamps, as a big influence. "He transmitted to me the bug of winning at any price.”

After a mixed start to life at United, having joined midway through a difficult season, Patrice showed his best form during 2006/07 as the Reds won the Premier League title. The French defender's extra gym time paid off as he came to terms with the physical demands of playing in England, and he notched his first Premier League and UEFA Champions League goals against Everton and Roma respectively. His part in United's successful season was recognised by a slot in the 2006/07 PFA Team of the Season, as voted by his Premier League peers.

Patrice made the left-back berth his own during 2007/08, missing only eight games in the triumphant Premier League and UEFA Champions League campaigns. The Frenchman's form and fitness were crucial to the parsimony of the defence, and he brought balance and abundant energy to the Reds' fluid, attacking wing play, even if he did not score any goals himself in a glorious season. He has maintained that fine form during the 2008/09 campaign and played his part in helping the Reds break the Premier League clean sheet record.

In June 2008, he signed a four-year contract extension keeping him at the club until the summer of 2012.

Porto push-start kept Evra dream alive

Patrice Evra has pinpointed last month's quarter-final win at FC Porto as the moment that put Manchester United FC's trophy charge back on track.

Turnaround
United's campaign seemed to be faltering when, after Premier League defeats by Liverpool FC and Fulham FC and a narrow escape against Aston Villa FC, they drew 2-2 at home to Porto in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg. However, Cristiano Ronaldo's wonder strike in Portugal, backed up by a defensive masterclass, marked a return to form for the European titleholders and new English champions.

'Trigger'
Left-back Evra explained: "We started conceding goals and lost 4-1 against Liverpool at home, which was painful. It was the first time I'd lost two games in a row with United. But we picked ourselves up against Porto in the most telling game of the season. After it finished 2-2 at home, people thought we were out, but we told ourselves: 'The star has always been the team.' We went over there and showed our strength – that was the trigger."

Free-wheeling
After that night on 15 April, United won seven of their next nine games, with the title-clinching stalemate against Arsenal FC – their vanquished UEFA Champions League semi-final opponents – and a goalless FA Cup semi-final with Everton FC the only blips. Normal service resumed at Old Trafford, says the French international: "The basis is the defence, and I don't just say that as a defender. We know we can score at any time, but if we're not solid defensively we won't get anywhere. When we went to Porto and had to win 1-0, Cristiano scored that amazing goal, but we defenders were aware we couldn't concede otherwise we were out."

'Legend'
With the Premier League crown captured for the third successive season, United's campaign culminates in next Wednesday's Rome final against FC Barcelona. Their mission will only be accomplished, however, if they lift the European Champion Clubs' Cup at the Stadio Olimpico as in Moscow last May. "Is this team better than last year? I say at the same level, but if we win we'll definitely be better," added the 28-year-old, "because to win the Champions League twice in a row would be to enter into legend. It's been our motivation since last year. I remember the boss on the bus saying 'congratulations but I need you to be ready for next year'. That makes you ready to try and retain the trophy. That's been the aim.

Winners
"The hunger comes from the mentality of the club – winning is the culture. We hardly celebrated after the title and Champions League last year. I had the sense that for certain players it was normal. People forget we're human. So if we lose a game, as against Liverpool and Fulham, it's a catastrophe. But that helps you put pressure on yourself."

Fear
The flying full-back sounds expert at that, such is his determination to avoid losing a second UEFA Champions League final following defeat with AS Monaco FC, against Porto, in 2004. "It'll be my third final and I've always said my aim is to win three. I could have won two, I only have one, so I don't want to mess this up," he said. "With the second final, I felt more pressure. It was strange, because I'd been with Monaco and then with Manchester, a big team, there was more pressure. I don't want to lose another final."

Power
Key to victory this time will be winning the individual battles against a Barcelona side United overcame 1-0 on aggregate in last season's semi-final. "The game will hinge on various duels and the team that wins those duels will win the game," Evra argued. "It'll be a great final – two teams who like to play football. What could be better? It'll be magnificent, but we'll have to win the duels. We'll have to be strong and impose the power we have. We can play but we're also powerful.

Tactics
"Barcelona have an incredible attacking armada," he went on. "We played them home and away last season in the semi-final and managed not to concede – we did a fantastic job tactically. It's up to us to reproduce a performance like that, but we're used to playing finals and we'll play to score."
