Vidic: I'm not leaving

Monday, June 15, 2009
Nemanja Vidic has quelled talk of a move away from United, insisting that he has eyes only for a trophy-laden future at Old Trafford.

The reigning Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year has been the subject of much media speculation in recent days, with Real Madrid and Barcelona allegedly pondering a big-money move for the Serbian defender.

However, Vidic insists he won't be following Cristiano Ronaldo to La Liga.

Instead, the 27-year-old and has his sights set on more record-breaking success with the Reds next season.

He told the News of the World: "I am very happy here and next season we will start again. I have got no desire to go anywhere.

"People forget that when you join a new league you don't just have to adjust to the country, you also have to adjust to the style of football.

"I feel my game is well adjusted to England now and I want to play a part in a successful team next season," he added. "United can make it a record four titles in a row next year."

Skipper reiterates Reds commitment

Club captain Gary Neville still relishes the 'special' feeling of representing United, and is intent on remaining at Old Trafford next season.

The long-serving defender had been linked with freshly-relegated Middlesbrough in a player-coach capacity, but Neville has shrugged off such tabloid conjecture and is looking to the future with United

"I played a good number of games last season and I hope that continues next season," he told The People, "because playing for this club is as special to me now as it was when I first pulled on the shirt as a schoolboy."

Neville concedes that the position of full-back has evolved in recent seasons, with greater emphasis on attacking support, but he is more than confident that he can continue to adapt alongside his younger peers.

"Full-backs have an important role, particularly at United, in terms of the way we attack and the way in which there's a transition from defence through our full-backs to attack," he said.

"The way you see guys like Patrice Evra and Rafael Da Silva attacking, they are more like wingers who can defend - they aren't just full-backs any more.

"The way in which the modern full-back like Rafael, Fabio and Patrice play is fantastic to watch. I don't do that in the same eye-catching way as they do, but you understand the changes and development in the game and the way I've had to adapt."

08/09 Review: Vidic

Aggressive, assertive, assured... Vida was United's most consistent defender in 2008/09...

In a season when the Reds' defensive strengths rose to the fore, Nemanja Vidic was selected as the club's player of the year by fans and team-mates alike.

However, Vida's legion of voters will no doubt have considered his attacking contributions as well after a campaign in which he scored seven goals in all competitions - three more than all the other United defenders could muster in total. Only the forwards - Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez and Berbatov - could outscore him.

Start to finish: The cornerstone to any successful side is a solid defence. United conceded just 0.51 goals per game in 2007/08 when Vidic, Ferdinand and van der Sar all played, and in 2008/09 the trio continued where they left off. The Serbian missed just four league games and during the side’s astonishing defensive run, he won 75 per cent of his tackles, and made more than three times as many clearances as any team-mate.

The Serbian missed just four league games and during the side’s astonishing defensive run, he won 75 per cent of his tackles, and made more than three times as many clearances as any team-mate.

In position: Vidic and Ferdinand formed an impenetrable wall for much of the season. And when Rio was injured, Nemanja assisted those chosen to play alongside him. He lined up with eight defenders during the amazing run of clean sheets.

Season highlights: Vidic - along with Edwin - was the only ever-present in the British record-breaking run of 14 consecutive league clean sheets. Not surprisingly, he won the PFA Player of the Month award in January.

Vital contribution: Nemanja’s last-minute goal against a stubborn Sunderland defence at Old Trafford in December was crucial, and he described his eighth strike in a United shirt as his most important. But he also provided an instant riposte to the officials’ blunder in disallowing the ‘corner trick’ opener against Chelsea, nodding in Giggs’ second delivery to ensure justice was done. He also drew first blood in the Reds' difficult Champions League last-16 tie against Internazionale at Old Trafford.

Any lows? The less said about the 4-1 home defeat to Liverpool the better, but suffice to say this was a rare off day for the Serbian, who had a chastening afternoon dealing with Torres and Gerrard and was eventually dismissed for his pains.

Any other business? Vida reached three figures twice this season: the Carling Cup game against Middlesbrough in September was his 100th competitive match for the Reds, while the home game against City in May was his 100th appearance in the league.

Transfer Rumours: Arrivals

The news that United have accepted a world record £80m bid for Cristiano Ronaldo has really got the transfer rumour mill going.

The Sunday Express reckons Sir Alex will make an audacious bid to sign Fernando Torres for £40m or, failing that, has Lyon striker Karim Benzema, Barcelona front man Samuel Eto’o, Atletico Madrid’s Sergio Aguero on an ever-increasing shopping list.

Franck Ribery heads the list of wingers linked with a move, despite Bayern's supposed £87m asking price. Ex-Chelsea man Arjen Robben, Valencia's David Silva and Wigan's Antonio Valencia are also named.

Manchester United has a policy of not commenting on transfer speculation.

Papers: La Liga raid

United to make record bid for Villa
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is making a British record £45million bid for Valencia striker David Villa. Ferguson will take on Real Madrid for the signature of the Spanish star who will be sold by his cash-strapped club. Villa has been on the United manager’s radar for several years and now he has the money from the £80m sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real to fight them for Villa. Ferguson has been given a £100m war chest – the whole £80m from the Ronaldo transfer plus £20m extra. Fergie’s priorities are a proven scorer like Villa and a right-wing replacement for the Portuguese star, Wigan’s Luis Antonio Valencia. Villa will definitely be sold by his club, with Real boasting they should land him this week. But Ferguson has already started his moves to beat them to it. Chelsea tried for Villa last week but were told he was going to Madrid. But Fergie won’t be put off and he has the financial muscle to back it up. The United chief thinks he can win the race for Villa if he can pitch the right case to him, backed up by cash. He is masterminding the move from his South of France holiday base.

The Sun claim United and Real Madrid will do battle for the signature of Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery, with Real sporting director Zinedine Zidane allegedly trying to convince his countryman to spurn United's advances.

As Cristiano Ronaldo prepares to finalise his move to La Liga, Portuguese national coach and former United assistant manager, Carlos Queiroz, warns: "I think Manchester United was the right club for him."
