Gallery: New home kit

Thursday, June 25, 2009
United's new home kit for the 2009/10 campaign has been officially unveiled and you can now see it in all its glory in our special gallery on ManUtd.com.

The red kit, which can be pre-ordered online now, celebrates 100 years of Old Trafford with a large chevron across the chest, reflecting the design of the shirts worn by United when the stadium first opened during the 1909/10 season.

The back of the shirt has an engineered mesh, which is a series of small chevrons, a performance feature to offer the players even greater ventilation during games. Inside the black round-neck collar is a high quality woven label in red, white and black, while engineered into the side seam is a small label that reads ‘The Theatre of Dreams Since 1910.’

The shirt is made from Nike Dri-Fit fabric, which keeps the players drier, cooler and lighter by drawing sweat from the body to the fabric’s surface, while it’s three-dimensional construction gives more air space around the skin to reduce clinging.

The white shorts have a red stripe along the side, a red devil graphic on the back of the waist band, while the draw cords feature 'MUFC' on the tips. The black socks have a red chevron on the calf.

The players will don the kit for the first time during their pre-season tour of Asia next month. The squad fly out to the Far East on 16 July - the day the kit goes on sale and on which pre-orders will be delivered.

Wayne Rooney says it's an honour to wear the shirt week in, week out and is looking forward to pulling on the latest design.

"It's always exciting to see the new kit," he told ManUtd.com. "It's important that we like it and get used to it before the season starts [on tour]. I'm really excited about playing in it."

Ji-sung Park echoed those sentiments, adding: "It always feels great to put the kit on and there is always a great meaning behind our kits. History is very important at this club and it’s something all the players are aware of.

"I really like the chevron feature – I like to think of it as ‘V’ for victory and hopefully we can win every game we play in the new kit."

Papers: Real or Reds?

Move is up to Antonio
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has warned Manchester United that Antonio Valencia will decide his own future. Whelan revealed he has received “acceptable” bids of between £14 and £18million from United and Real Madrid, but it is up to the Ecuador winger, who returns to England this weekend. Sources close to Valencia suggest he will opt for United because of Cristiano Ronaldo’s presence at Real, but Whelan said: “There are offers on the table acceptable to Wigan, but what we will finish up with I don’t know. It’s no use me saying he is going to Manchester United – he is the boss. One club could offer £2m more, but if Antonio doesn’t want to go there then there’s no point.”
Richard Tanner, Daily Express

According to the Daily Mail, Atletico Madrid have told United they will not sell Sergio Aguero for less than £50million, while the Daily Star claims the Reds will have to fork out at least £52m to secure the Argentine's services. The tabloid also reckons Giuseppe Rossi's agent has alerted United that the striker may be available after talks over a new Villarreal contract stalled.

In other news, the Daily Mirror say Real Madrid could hijack United’s bid to land Karim Benzema after claiming they have given up the chase for Valencia’s David Villa.

Finally, Hull boss Phil Brown has begged Fraizer Campbell to listen to the advice of Sir Alex Ferguson and join Hull. Brown revealed how Sir Alex has told Campbell that joining the Tigers would be the best move for his career.

08/09 Review: Possebon

Rodrigo Possebon picked up Carling Cup and Community Shield winners' medals in his first season as a senior squad member and already has his own song...

The Brazilian midfielder – like his defensive compatriot, Rafael – impressed by scoring in a pre-season friendly, with a stunning strike against Burscough.

That boosted his already burgeoning reputation, and after a league debut as a sub in the 1-1 draw with Newcastle in August, he came on again eight days later at Fratton Park – this time for Anderson.

An injury sustained against Middlesbrough in the Carling Cup threatened to curtail his season; the challenge from Emmanuel Pogatetz turned out not to be too serious, but his subsequent chances were limited.

A league cup medal under his belt and a year of being schooled in the harshness of English football will certainly prepare the youngster for the next phase in his progression and Red legend Bryan Robson feels there’s plenty more to come from the stylish midfielder.

“In the first-team games, where Sir Alex has put him on as substitute, he looks as if he has great ability on the ball.”

Blog: Labour of love

Not many people get to work for the team they support, even fewer have the opportunity to help develop the club's future stars. Yet that's what Mark Johnson - Academy supervisor since 2003 - and a host of Red-supporting colleagues get to do on a weekly basis during the season...

Virtually all the staff are big United fans so we all get a real buzz out of working here especially as this is the place where you see some of the club’s stars of tomorrow. All the Under-18 Academy games are shown live on MUTV and typically kick-off at 11am on a Saturday.

At the same time, the club’s Under-16 team play the opposition’s equivalent age range on one of the other pitches. On a Sunday we also look after the matches involving the Academy’s younger sides – on one weekend the Under-14s, 12s and 10s will play at home, with the Under-13s, 11s and 9s playing the same team away. It then swaps around the following weekend.

In preparation for Under-18 and 16 games, we usually get to Carrington for 9am to open up the changing rooms and get things ready for when the teams arrive which is usually between 9.30 and 10am. I work alternate weekends with my colleague Ian Armstrong.

As well as myself and Ian, there are three permanent attendants - Dave Murray, Christine Royal and Allyson Peel. Two others - Kieran Cook and Stuart Brown – help out for the bigger games and we also have two canteen ladies - Lindsey Amuzu and Lesley Brown - who look after refreshments for the coaching staff and visitors.

One of our main duties is to make sure everyone using the facilities does so safely. Our attendants are also on hand to assist the physios when and where needed if a player is injured and needs medical attention at hospital.

Another major part of our job involves child protection – the law states that we cannot allow anyone to take photographs of any players under 18 so the attendants keep an eye out to make sure spectators adhere to that rule.

We get decent crowds most weeks and for the bigger games against the likes of Liverpool and City we can have around 200 people. There’s always big rivalry when we play those sides, but our pitchside attendants make sure the parents don’t get too excited and start shouting at the referee!

Now and again, some of the first team pop along to the games. Knowing your heroes are watching is a great boost for the young lads. The club have always put a lot of time and effort into developing young talent and, as staff, we get a real thrill out of seeing the likes of Danny Welbeck and Jonny Evans progress to the first team having watched them come through the ranks.

The facilities for the club’s young players are second to none and it’s a real privilege to be part of the process that helps unearth some future stars.
