17/06/2009 10:00, Report by Ben Hibbs

United will kick off the 2009/10 Barclays Premier League season by facing newly-promoted teams in the first two games.

Birmingham City come to Old Trafford on the campaign's opening weekend, before the champions visit fellow North West side Burnley in midweek.

The Reds then travel to Wigan, before a potentially tougher run brings home matches against Arsenal and Manchester City either side of a visit to Harry Redknapp's Tottenham.

ManUtd.com readers said games against Liverpool are the ones to scan for first when the fixtures are announced - United travel to Anfield on 24 October, before entertaining Rafael Benitez's men at Old Trafford on 20 March.

Blog: An even spread

Steve Bartram reacts to the release of United's 2009/10 league schedule...

Fixtures day is a strange beast. The early-morning suspense is ephemeral; dashed by the realisation that you knew all along what would happen. It's like going to see a film when someone has already spoiled the ending for you.

You have to play each team twice, teams who have long-since been determined. Nevertheless, it's still cause for excitement. Important questions demand answers upon the list's publication. How tough are the opening weeks? Who do we face in the run-in? When shall we welcome our nearest and not-so dearest to Old Trafford, or head over to their places?

Basically, in terms of the freshly-published 2009/10 Barclays Premier League fixture list, the first and last three games look navigable, the Manchester derbies fall in September and April, while October and March present the Reds with opportunities to avenge last season's double defeat to Liverpool.

It's worth a further delve, especially after last season's demonstration of how the fixture list can be both help and hindrance, when an unfathomably tough start to the season left few daunting hurdles during the title run-in.

This year's schedule looks to have a more even spread to it, with the toughest run coming between mid-March and mid-April (Liverpool, Bolton, Chelsea, Blackburn, City in under a month).

On top, as one of few silver linings to last month's defeat in Rome, there are no UEFA Super Cup or Club World Cup trips, hence no immediate postponements which hang over the club for the rest of the season in an already packed schedule.

Perhaps most importantly, there is no repeat of last season's anomaly whereby the Reds were away from home after every Champions League group game. This term, three are home (Manchester City, Sunderland, Aston Villa) and three are away (Liverpool, Chelsea, Portsmouth). Much will depend on how the European fixtures fall, (Anfield or Stamford Bridge would be infinitely more daunting after a long trip to Turkey, for example) but that won't become clear until the Champions League draw on 27 August.

All we know for sure is what we already knew, plus a touch more detail. It's only three weeks since the disappointment of Rome, and the players may still be recharging their batteries on sunny shores around the globe, but now we can all look ahead with a little more clarity to next season. The assault on more silverware begins here.

Park makes point for Korea

17/06/2009 15:30, Report by Adam Bostock

Ji-sung Park ensured an unbeaten run to the 2010 World Cup for Korea Republic on Wednesday, when he scored a late equaliser against Iran in Seoul.

The United midfielder was staring a first qualifying loss in the face until he received a pass from Lee Keun-ho and fired home a stunning left-foot shot in the 81st minute. Park's effort cancelled out an owngoal netted 30 minutes earlier by team-mate Kim Dong-jin.

The South Koreans had already qualified but they'll no doubt take pride from avoiding defeat in their eight-game campaign. Skippered by Park, they posted four wins and four draws in progressing from Asia Group 2 to their seventh consecutive World Cup finals.

Australia and Japan are the other certain qualifiers from Asia so far, having finished first and second respectively in Group 1. The two sides met on Wednesday with Everton's Tim Cahill scoring both goals in the Socceroos' 2-1 victory.

Transfer Rumours: Arrivals

Cristiano Ronaldo's £80m move to Real Madrid hasn't been completed yet, but the Reds are already linked with plenty of potential replacements.

Aston Villa's Ashley Young and Gremio starlet Douglas Costa are the latest names on the grapevine, while with Carlos Tevez's future as yet unresolved, the press are also linking Sir Alex with a move for a host of the game's top striking talent.

An audacious £40m offer for Fernando Torres is tippped in the Sunday Express, while Lyon's Karim Benzema, Barcelona front man Samuel Eto’o, Atletico Madrid’s Sergio Aguero continue to attract attention.

Franck Ribery has seemingly slipped off the radar with Chelsea and moneybags Real Madrid in hot pursuit, while ex-Chelsea man Arjen Robben, Valencia's David Silva and Wigan's Antonio Valencia are also named.

08/09 Review: Nani

There was only a bit-part role for the Portuguese winger in the Reds' latest title challenge, with Ji-sung Park keeping him out for much of the campaign. But, like so many, he provided vital cover at key stages. His best years still lie ahead of him, and he’ll be ready to kick on after the lessons learned in a difficult second season at OT...

Start to finish: Nani failed to match the form of his debut season, starting just six league games. The impressive displays of others restricted his chances, and without a sustained run in the side he struggled to make an impact.

In position: Like Ronaldo, Nani can play on either wing and has an impressive line in net-busting piledrivers. Now he needs consistency in his crossing to become a genuine asset out wide.

Season highlight: He hit some cracking goals in the cups - his fierce drive in the 4-2 win over Derby in the Carling Cup the pick of a very good bunch - and if he can translate that form to league and European competition, he'll be a very valuable asset indeed.

Vital contribution: Just that solitary goal in the league, but Nani’s cup contributions – five goals, all spectacular – ensured the Reds kept moving in the right direction in all competitions.

Any lows? Not a single 90-minute runout in the league...

Any other business? International callups continue, and Sir Alex predicts a bright future for Nani for both club and country.
