Rio's campaign curtailed

Monday, June 8, 2009
Rio Ferdinand's long season is over, after his troublesome calf injury failed to clear up in time for England's World Cup qualifier against Andorra.

The United central defender missed Saturday's win over Kazakhstan because of the strain, which he carried during the latter stages of the Reds' season, but any lingering hopes of featuring at Wembley on Wednesday have been dashed by his failure to sufficiently recover over the weekend.

Fabio Capello's men have a 100 percent qualifying record with six straight victories, and can move to the brink of a berth in next summer's finals in South Africa with victory over a side ranked 196th in the world.

Wayne Rooney, a scorer in the 4-0 win over Kazakhstan, will expect to be in the starting line-up, while United team-mate Gary Neville will be aiming for a first taste of international football since February 2007.

Ferdinand joins Michael Carrick in withdrawing from the Three Lions squad through injury.

Cantona: The catalyst

There have been longer, less torrid love affairs, but few are burned into the memory as indelibly as Eric Cantona’s five-season fling at Old Trafford. In the week he hits the silver screen in Looking For Eric, ManUtd.com examines why the Frenchman remains one of the club’s most idolised players…

That Eric Cantona's arrival from Leeds only slightly preceded the end of United's 26-year wait for the League title was no coincidence – the Frenchman was the brooding, swaggering catalyst behind the most successful period in the Reds' history.

Prior to his signing, the Reds were teetering between nearly men and battle-hardened winners. So much was already in place for success: The unflinching defence, a midfield combining industry and incision, and the blend of brutality and subtlety in attack.

It was a side which could claim to be the finest in the land, yet still missed that telling je ne sais quoi of champions. Cantona’s arrival provided the Gallic afflatus to send United over the tipping point - just as he had with Leeds some nine months earlier as the Whites pilfered the 1991/92 title from under the Reds' noses.

Midway through the following campaign, with the Reds in steady but unspectacular form, a phone call from Leeds chief executive Bill Fotherby provoked a moment of opportunism from Sir Alex. Fotherby had dialled Old Trafford to broach the potential signing of Denis Irwin. Instead, less than an hour later, he and Leeds boss Howard Wilkinson had agreed to send Cantona across the Pennines for a cut-price £1million.

With that spontaneous counter-offer, Ferguson had bought the player who would bring glory back to United. As the manager subsequently admitted in his autobiography: “One of the most extraordinary periods in the history of Manchester United was about to begin.” But beyond simply signing a top class talent who guaranteed more points and prizes, the Reds had snared a man with the mentality and charisma of a champion. Even the manager was taken aback by the immediacy of Cantona’s off-field impact.

At the end of his first training session at The Cliff, Eric strolled up to Sir Alex and asked him for two players and a goalkeeper, so that he may continue to practice. An extra half-hour was spent with the Frenchman volleying crosses from either side. The next day, half the first team squad stayed for the extra-curricular session.

“Many people have justifiably acclaimed Cantona as a catalyst who had a crucial impact on our successes while he was with the club,” said the manager, “but nothing he did in matches meant more than the way he opened my eyes to the indispensability of practice.”

A squad who, hitherto, had little tangible success to back up their glaring promise was revitalised. Over a quarter-century of anguish and near-misses was soon a distant memory as the Reds elbowed their way to the head of a three-way tussle for the title alongside Aston Villa and Norwich City. There was even the flourish of champions – seven straight wins to end the season in style.

The winning habit had started and Cantona, chest puffed, collar upturned, was the charismatic face of the new champions. Previously something of a journeyman, the Frenchman had a loving home at last. He had achieved near-divinity with United supporters, who saw in Cantona the edgy visionary which had lived deep within Manchester’s favourite sons, from Best to Bez.

As the adulation gushed forth from the stands, the trophies were flowing at a similar rate. In his five seasons at Old Trafford, Cantona won four Premier League titles and two FA Cups. Indeed the only season in which the Reds failed to clinch England’s crown, the French talisman was spectacularly sidelined. Had Cantona not taken exception to the baitings of Crystal Palace supporter Matthew Simmons at Selhurt Park and collected a nine-month ban for his troubles, the history books could very easily tell the tale of United’s five successive league titles between 1993 and 1997.

Cantona’s importance during his playing career was obvious - he was team talisman and a phenomenal player. But it’s the seismic shift in mentality he instigated among the players which continues to be felt around Old Trafford. Over 12 years after he retired, the winning habit he championed shows no sign of culmination.

Blog: In safe hands

Goalkeeping coach Eric Steele reflects on a successful season for United's senior shot-stoppers, including the record-breaking Edwin van der Sar...

To be a goalkeeper at Manchester United you need to be able to maintain total concentration for 90 minutes. You might not have anything to do for 60, 70, 80 minutes, but you always have to be alert to any danger.

In Edwin van der Sar, Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak we have three top keepers more than capable of doing that. Take the derby victory over City at Old Trafford - Edwin was in goal that day and it wasn’t until the 86th minute that he was really called upon, yet he still pulled off a stunning finger-tip save from Martin Petrov; one of the best saves of the season in my book.

People sometimes forget about that aspect of Edwin’s game. We all know about his vast experience and the calming influence he brings, but he’s also a terrific shot-stopper. Just as scoring a goal can be a defining moment in a game, so too can making a crucial save and he’s made his fair share.

We know if we keep a clean sheet we’ve got players who can do the business at the other end and that was proven during the side’s record run which I believe will take some breaking. Edwin obviously played a major part, but it’s an achievement for everyone because it takes into account how we defended as a team at set-pieces, as well as the job the back five did.

Edwin may be in the twilight of his career but he hasn’t lost any of his enthusiasm and it’s fantastic to see the competitive edge and spirit amongst all the keepers.

Ben and Tomasz know Edwin is going to stand down at some stage in the next year or so and they have both worked extremely hard in their bid to take over his mantle. Ben struggled with injuries last season which allowed Tomasz his chance, but Ben’s been handed his opportunities this time round and has given a great account of himself.

The manager certainly has some fantastic options in the goalkeeping department and it’s my job to help ensure they’re ready to perform whenever they’re called upon.

Eric Steele was speaking to Inside United magazine. A special issue celebrating the Reds' 18th title success is on sale now and can be ordered online.

Transfer Rumours: Arrivals

The rumour mill is starting to catch up with the so-called rebuilding predicted by the press following United's defeat in Rome.

The familiar names being bandied around include Lyon striker Karim Benzema, Wigan winger Antonio Valencia and Dutch forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar who's rumoured to be restless at Real Madrid. More obscure suggestions range from Valencia's team-mate, Maynor Figueroa to Sheffield United right-back Kyle Naughton and Le Mans goalkeeper Yohann Pele.

Some of the fees being mentioned are plain one-upmanship. Kaka's worth £60m is he? Pah! We want £87m for Franck Ribery, say Bayern Munich. The Guardian links United with the latter, although Chelsea seem more likely buyers.

Manchester United has a policy of not commenting on transfer speculation.

Papers: Back to Hull

Campbell caught by Tigers
Hull have had a bid for striker Fraizer Campbell accepted by Manchester United. The 21-year-old enjoyed a successful loan spell at the KC Stadium in the 2007-08 season, scoring 15 goals in 32 starts to help the Tigers into the Premier League. Despite Hull's desire to keep Campbell for their first season in the top flight he instead went on loan to Tottenham for most of the campaign. Now they have now had a £6million bid accepted by the champions and been given permission to open talks. - Staff reporter, Daily Mirror

Widespread reports suggest Wigan's Luis Antonio Valencia could be on his way to United. A deal could be struck this week, for £17million, according to the Daily Mirror, but the Daily Mail feels the Reds are in a bidding war with Real Madrid.

Other transfer rumours in the weekend papers included Sir Alex Ferguson joining the "chase for Sheffield United's £7million-rated whizz-kid Kyle Naughton. Fergie had brilliant young right-back Naughton watched in the Blades' 1-0 Championship Play-Off Final defeat by Burnley at Wembley 13 days ago and the 20-year-old Sheffield-born starlet did not disappoint." (Sunday Mirror)

The Reds are also being linked with a new goalkeeper, at least in the News of the World: "France keeper Yohann Pele is on United's wishlist. The 6ft 5in Le Mans ace, 26, has attracted interest from the likes of Arsenal and Spurs. But Alex Ferguson is favourite to sign Pele, seen as the perfect understudy to Edwin van der Sar."

Having scored on Saturday as England moved ever closer to a berth at next year's World Cup finals in South Africa, Wayne Rooney is quoted in The Sun on his dream of winning silverware at international level.

08/09 Review: Anderson

A bundle of energy and a huge fans’ favourite, Anderson’s buccaneering displays have been less frequent than last year, but a strong start to the campaign preceded a dynamic finish...

Start to finish: After returning from his summer stint at the Olympics with a bronze medal, Anderson started seven of United’s first 11 league games – including the narrow defeats at Liverpool and Arsenal (his 50th United appearance). Despite a mid-season lay-off he was back to his combative best as the Reds closed in on the league title, although his most conspicuous efforts came in the latter stages of the Champions League.

In position: Deputising for the injured Michael Carrick, Anderson started the season protecting the back four while putting his engine to good use in support of the attack. The effervescent Brazilian, while never afraid of getting stuck in, also showed his creative side with a wealth of slide-rule passes in the final third.

Season highlight: Anderson may yet to have officially opened his United account but his reputation for scoring in crucial shoot-outs grew as he thumped home the winning penalty in the Carling Cup final at Wembley.

Vital contribution: Simply being there when the boss needed to call on his services, and never giving less than 100 per cent.

Any lows? A New Year ankle injury interrupted his early-season influence. Oh, and we’re still waiting for his first goal from open play – apparently he has an interesting celebration lined up…

Any other business? According to his team-mates, he doesn’t take himself too seriously. “He’s carefree, relaxed and tries things out,” said Ryan Giggs. “Hilarious,” was Owen Hargreaves’ verdict.

Reds top US sports poll

United's global appeal scored a small but significant victory this week when the Reds were compared to two behemoths of North American sports.

Listeners to a popular sports radio programme in the US, The Dan Patrick Show, were asked to vote on which club they'd most like to own. There were three options - United, plus two of the biggest names from American football and baseball in Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees respectively.

To the surprise of the programme's producers, the Reds topped the poll on the Sports Illustrated website, accruing 35 per cent of the votes. Dallas Cowboys came a very close second with 34 pc while the Yankees weren't too far behind with the remaining 31 pc.

It's not the first time the Reds and the Cowboys have been sized up - an article from Forbes magazine in September of last year listed the five-times Superbowl winners as the most valuable sports club in the US, and the second most valuable in the world behind only United.
