Report by Press Department

Manchester United is delighted to announce it has completed the signing of Antonio Valencia from Wigan Athletic on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old Ecuador international has played 34 times for his country, scoring four goals.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: “Antonio is a player we have admired for some time now, having spent the last two years in the Premier League with Wigan. I am sure his pace and ability will make a significant contribution to the team.”

Antonio Valencia said: “Joining Manchester United is a dream come true for me. I have enjoyed my time at Wigan, but I am thrilled to have the chance to challenge for the biggest honours in club football here.

“Playing in front of 76,000 fans alongside players like Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs will be an amazing experience. I can’t wait to get started.”

Irwin hails new signing

Report by Nick Coppack

Reds legend Denis Irwin is confident new signing Antonio Valencia will fit right in at Old Trafford.

A speedy and skilful winger, Valencia caught the eye of the former United full-back during his three seasons at Wigan Athletic.

"He’s very direct, you can tell he’s a worker and he’s got great pace," Irwin told MUTV. "He’s a good player and he gives us more options up front.

"I was very impressed with him in the two games I saw him play last season, especially at Old Trafford. I think he’ll be a great signing for us."

Valencia, 23, is most at home out on the right wing, but can also operate as an attacking central midfielder.

The Ecuador international completed his move from Wigan on Tuesday 30 June and is expected to join his new team-mates at Carrington next Monday when the players report back for pre-season training.

Scouting: Who would you sign?

It was a memorable evening for Germany on Monday night after they clinched the UEFA European U21 Championship title with a crushing victory over Stuart Pearce's England.

Gonzalo Castro, Mesut Ozil and a Sandro Wagner double secured a 4-0 win over the Three Lions who were without the suspended Gabriel Agbonlahor, Joe Hart and United striker Fraizer Campbell.

Throughout the tournament in Sweden we asked Talking Reds users to cast an expert eye over the players involved and pick out the top talent who could be potential transfer targets for Sir Alex.

We've been inundated with scouting reports on the message board, but which of the players that have been highlighted would you most like to see at Old Trafford? You can vote now.
Report by Gemma Thompson

If United were in the market for a goalkeeper then Spain's Sergio Asenjo and Finland's Jukka Lehtovaara both look good prospects. So too does Germany stopper Manuel Neuer who kept four clean sheets in five games, including the final.

Turning to the defence, Germany's defensive all-rounder Jerome Boateng impressed our scouts, as did Finland's Jukka Raitala who can play anywhere along the backline. Another stand-out performer was Italian skipper Marco Motta who plays at right-back.

Further forward, Serbia midfielder Gojko Kacar and Germany's winger-cum-striker Marko Marin both caught the eye, as did Italian playmaker Sebastian Giovinco, England and Middlesbrough winger Adam Johnson and Swedish holding midfielder Gustav Svensson.

With the Reds losing two of last season's four main attackers following the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez, Sir Alex would seemingly be in the market for a new front man and there were a host of impressive performers in that area.

Sweden's Marcus Berg fired a hat-trick in his country's opening win over Belarus and went on to claim the tournament Golden Boot, while powerful Finnish striker Berat Sadik and Spain and Barcelona starlet Bojan Krkic both looked lively in front of goal.

Talking Reds scouts certainly picked out some top talent, but who would you like to see Sir Alex make a move for? Vote now.

Blog: Nani states a claim

Report by Caroline Hunt

As one door slams shut, ending Cristiano Ronaldo's OT career, here’s to another swinging wide open.

Ronny wasn’t United’s only fleet-footed wide player with a rocket of a shot in his locker, and attack permanently on his mind, and Nani, after last season’s bench-warming nightmare, has already made it plain he feels he can fill his compatriot’s boots. So could 09/10 finally be his breakthrough season? Well, freed from operating in the shadow of the World Player of the Year, there’s absolutely no reason why not.

Last season, on the rare occasions when Nani got the nod, the pressure showed. His desire to shine was painfully obvious, but more often than not his desperation to showcase his individual talent ended in him overcooking it. Now, though, the shackles should be off. He just needs to realise he doesn’t have to do it all on his own every time; with his vim and vigour incorporated within the Reds’ mind-boggling attacking play, he can play a massive part.

Of course, that could all change should Antonio Valencia saunter down the road from the JJB. But despite recent reports suggesting that Sir Alex might be prepared to let the Portuguese winger swap places with Valencia, the Reds boss saw enough in the then-20-year-old to prise him away from Sporting Lisbon two years ago, and after the last campaign, insisted that the Portuguese wide player was still very much part of United’s future.

“The form of Park has been absolutely outstanding and most of the time has kept Nani out of the team,” said the gaffer. “Getting a consistent run has really been the problem for him and then he got a little injury. But he will be here next season and he will do very well for us.”

It should also be remembered that not even Ronaldo swept all before him right from the off. In his inaugural United season he hit four league goals in 15 starts, figures not far removed from Nani’s three in 16.

Admittedly, Nani finished last season with just a single league strike to his name, but to be fair, he only started seven games. And while he’s got plenty of pace, he’s not your quintessential impact-off-the-bench type of player – which is unfortunate, as with the likes of Darren Fletcher and (as the boss pointed out) Ji-sung Park in flying form, the bench was as good as it got for large chunks of Nani's season.

Nani could also probably have done without Ryan Giggs apparently discovering the elixir of neverending footballing life. No-one could have imagined that the Reds’ record-breaker would plough a furrow for as many minutes last season as he did. But time is one thing most definitely on Nani’s side, and with perhaps a little better luck, plus more of the patience he’s already shown by the bucketload, his time may be about to come.

Ronaldo Mk II? Perhaps not, but Nani Mk I could be a force in his own right…

Papers: Edwin's curtain call

Edwin set to call it a day
Edwin van der Sar will hang up his gloves at the end of next season. Manchester United's veteran keeper, 38, has discussed his plans with friends and family and will break the news to Alex Ferguson when he returns to pre-season training. England squad man Ben Foster, 26, is now finally set to get the chance to shine. A United source said: "Edwin has reviewed his options after each season and thinks this could be his last year. "He is determined to go out at the top and is raring to go next season."
Staff reporter, The Sun

On the day his United contract expires, striker Carlos Tevez fires a parting shot about Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to leave him out of the Champions League Final. "You cannot argue with Alex Ferguson," he said. "But he made a mistake to leave me on the bench. That was the only final the team had lost since I had been at United."

Meanwhile, The Mirror and other tabloids claim Luis Antonio Valencia has passed a medical and will complete a £16million move to United today, taking over Cristiano Ronaldo's number seven shirt.

Transfer Rumours: Arrivals

The flames of speculation have been stoked this summer by the exits of Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo - and the £80million offered by Real Madrid for the latter.

Brazilians Luis Fabiano, Nilmar and Douglas Costa are among the names on the grapevine, while Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery, Lyon's Karim Benzema, Barcelona front man Samuel Eto’o and Atletico Madrid’s Sergio Aguero have also been touted for transfers to Old Trafford.

Intriguingly, the Daily Mail has tipped the Reds to make a bid for Real keeper Iker Casillas, with Edwin van der Sar in the twilight of his career.

Manchester United has a policy of not commenting on transfer speculation.
