There was only a bit-part role for the Portuguese winger in the Reds' latest title challenge, with Ji-sung Park keeping him out for much of the campaign. But, like so many, he provided vital cover at key stages. His best years still lie ahead of him, and he’ll be ready to kick on after the lessons learned in a difficult second season at OT...
Start to finish: Nani failed to match the form of his debut season, starting just six league games. The impressive displays of others restricted his chances, and without a sustained run in the side he struggled to make an impact.
In position: Like Ronaldo, Nani can play on either wing and has an impressive line in net-busting piledrivers. Now he needs consistency in his crossing to become a genuine asset out wide.
Season highlight: He hit some cracking goals in the cups - his fierce drive in the 4-2 win over Derby in the Carling Cup the pick of a very good bunch - and if he can translate that form to league and European competition, he'll be a very valuable asset indeed.
Vital contribution: Just that solitary goal in the league, but Nani’s cup contributions – five goals, all spectacular – ensured the Reds kept moving in the right direction in all competitions.
Any lows? Not a single 90-minute runout in the league...
Any other business? International callups continue, and Sir Alex predicts a bright future for Nani for both club and country.
