United's global appeal scored a small but significant victory this week when the Reds were compared to two behemoths of North American sports.
Listeners to a popular sports radio programme in the US, The Dan Patrick Show, were asked to vote on which club they'd most like to own. There were three options - United, plus two of the biggest names from American football and baseball in Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees respectively.
To the surprise of the programme's producers, the Reds topped the poll on the Sports Illustrated website, accruing 35 per cent of the votes. Dallas Cowboys came a very close second with 34 pc while the Yankees weren't too far behind with the remaining 31 pc.
It's not the first time the Reds and the Cowboys have been sized up - an article from Forbes magazine in September of last year listed the five-times Superbowl winners as the most valuable sports club in the US, and the second most valuable in the world behind only United.
